Bats in the BUTI: #Fledermaus. A new English adaptation of the operetta DIE FLEDERMAUS, Libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genee, Music by Johann Strauss II. Written and Directed by Sarah Meyers.
The good people at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute have initiated a new opera program and are presenting for two performances only this newly created, 21st century-centric, edition of the classic Johann Strauss Operetta, or comic opera. With a young cast performing on a simple set with a single piano accompaniment, the freshness of the material emerged through the freshness of the performances.
There are two different casts, the alternate cast acting as the chorus on other performances, and the Friday night ensemble presented some excellent work on the stage at BUTI's West Street performance hall. Not really open for review, it still needs to be remarked upon for this was one of the most charming presentations of the theater season so far. It gives me hope that the Tanglewood Institute's young performers will be given more opportunities in the future to bring more excellent work to this arena, supported by generous donors who believe that the truest form of training in the arts is the actual doing, the performing as learning.
That is what this is all about and when it brings enjoyment to the audience and the performers, then it is all so very worthwhile.
